Loan description:
Chandy Chhoum is 29 years old and married with two children. His children are aged 4 and 7 and the eldest is studying at the local primary school while the youngest doesn’t go to school yet. They live in Prek Norin village, which is in Ek Phnom district, Battambang province. Chandy has been a farmer for over six years and presently farms nine hectares of rice paddy located close to his home. The yield gives him about two and a half tonnes per hectare and he needs to stock one tonne of this for his family's basic needs and sells the remainder to a local trader. Chandy owns a hand tractor, which he uses to operate his farm, and this helps to reduce some of the costs associated with farming. To grow rice every year he needs a great working capital, so he has sought a 12 month loan to help finance this. He will use his loan to buy seeds, commercial fertiliser, insecticide, weed killer, diesel for his hand tractor and water pump and to help cover some of his labour and harvesting costs.
