Roldan Piedraverde is 47 years old and married with one son who is 19 years old. He also financially supports his daughter-in-law and a seven month old grandson while his son seeks permanent work. Roldan's wife is called Merlinda. He is a welder and operates from a shop which is located near his home in the town of Baybay in the province of Leyte. He previously worked as a researcher for six years ago and then decided to open his shop that accepts welding orders. Mainly he welds sidecars for motor-taxis, metal fences and machines. He employs two relatives as apprentices. The business is about 12 kilometres from the nearest town centre. He has sought financial assistance from the microfinance organisation, Zaragosa Agrarian Reform Cooperative, in order to purchase new tools and equipment. He has been a regular borrower over the years and this will be his tenth loan. He intends to repay the loan over a period of six months. His hope is hat his business grows and becomes more stable.
