Pheap Phal is 36 years old and married with three children aged 9, 5 and 1 respectively. Only the eldest attends school. She lives with her family in Prek trob village, Prek Norin commune, Ek Phnom district, Battambang province. Pheap and her husband, Touch Veng, 37, have worked as farmers for over ten years. They farm one and a half hectares of rice paddy. They receive a yield of around three tonnes per hectare. They keep one tonne of rice for their own household consumption and sell the remainder. During the dry season, they tend to grow watermelons, green beans and also cucumbers on the same land. Their crops are sold to local merchants. Pheap sought a six month loan in order to buy seeds, diesel, insecticide, and diesel for their hand tractor. Pheap wants in the future to open a small shop from home.
