Rath Yoem is 29 years old married with one daughter who is one year old. She lives in Rach doun Koe village, Ek Phnom district which is in Battambang province in north-west Cambodia. Rath and her husband, Chem Roeurn who is 30, have worked as farmers for the last five years. They farm two hectares of rice paddy located about five kilometres from their home. The yield is generally around three tonnes per hectare and they usually sell their crop directly to the local rice miller. They do keep around one tonne of rice for their own household consumption. During the dry season they grow watermelons, cucumbers and green beans on the same land. Rath applied for a loan in order to buy seeds, fertilizer, insecticide and diesel for their hand tractor. She expects to repay the loan over seven months.
