Loan description:
Chealy Horm lives in Kropue Chueng village in the Banon district of Battambang. She is 45 years old and married with three children aged 15, 12 and 8 respectively. All are attending a local school. She has been a member of Takream Credit Union for about one year. Chealy and her husband, Nan Pong who is 51, have worked as farmers for the past five years. They cultivate about six hectares of rice paddy located some five kilometres from where they live. Three hectares are used to grow rice, providing a yield of approximately three tonnes per hectare. The majority is sold to merchants and Chealy keeps about one tonne for the family's own consumption. The remaining three hectares are used to grow maize. On average they receive a yield of about five tonnes per hectare for the maize which they again sell to traders. They rent a tractor to plough their land each year which costs $70 per hectare. Chealy's husband Nan also sells ice cream within the village and he can earn about US$5 a day. Chealy applied for a loan, repayable over seven months, in order to buy fertiliser, insecticide, and pay for the cost of ploughing. Chealy's aim is to ensure that all her children graduate from school.
