Loan description:
Chanthou Neang is 53 years old and a widow with three sons who are aged between 17 and 28. They live in Bakrotes village, Prek Loung commune, Ek Phnom district in Battambang province. Chanthou has been a member of Ek Phnom Credit Union for the past three years. Chanthou has worked as a farmer all her adult life. She owns three hectares of rice paddy, which provide her with a yield in the region of three tonnes per hectare. She grows green beans on the same land after harvesting the rice. Fortunately all of her crops are bought in bulk by traders at her home. She keeps about one tonne of rice for the family's own consumption. Chanthou also owns her own hand tractor which she uses to plough the land. Chanthou applied for a five month loan from the credit union in order to buy seeds, weedkiller, insecticide and pay for harvesting costs. Since the demand for rice is quite high, Chanthou aims to rent another one and half hectares of rice paddy next year and increase her production.
